Stick and Poke

So, I’ve had an interesting weekend. Friday night consisted of adventures around New Orleans until about 5am, and Sunday night ended with me at a gymnastics practice, learning to do a back handspring. (If it ends up that the gymnastics wasn’t just a fluke, I’ll be posting more about that later.) But probably the most interesting thing that happened this weekend was me getting a tattoo… in my dorm room, done by my friend. Yep! That happened.

A little background for those of you who don’t know, stick and poke tattoos are fairly common. You simply get india ink (it’s non toxic), but together a little needle-contraption, and poke the design about a million and a half times. I have several friends that have their own stick and pokes, my friend Katie, who did mine, included. It sounds a little crazy (and, really, it is), but I’ve been wanting to do one of these for quite some time now. I’ve been contemplating designs, and eventually decided on a small female symbol on my hip. Katie sat me down, we drew the design on, and then she sat, poking me, for about two hours.

In response to the inevitable question, yes, it did hurt. But it’s a strange type of hurt. The individual pokes don’t hurt, but, given that they were happening constantly for about 2 hours, it got pretty uncomfortable. Luckily, I have a pretty high pain tolerance! It’s really hard to compare this to my first tattoo, because that one was done in under 45 minutes. The placement of the first was definitely more painful (gotta love rib tatts), but it was so quick that it didn’t hurt too bad. I think I’d overall describe this one as uncomfortable rather than painful.

I’m so so so happy with how it turned out, and I (so far) have had no issues with infection or anything like that. I’ll be keeping careful watch over it, cleaning it religiously, just to be safe. Overall, this was a great experience, one that brought me closer to my friend Katie for sure. I’m not necessarily planning on doing any more, but I also wouldn’t rule it out completely… (sorry mom!)

Disclaimer: if you decide to do a stick and poke because of this post, I will not be held responsible for any ill-effects!! But if you end up doing one, let me know! If you already have one, comment and show me! These things are just so cool 🙂

Stay tuned for more updates,

xoxo, second sister suzie
