I’m just a little late on blogging about this. Okay, I’m super late, things have been really busy! Because it’s been so long, I have few rather significant events to talk about, so bear with me for this scatterbrained post.
I’ve mentioned the brilliant writer that is Rebecca Solnit in a few recent blog posts. I knew she was an amazing writer, but I just recently fell in love with her many books and essays. My English class has been reading quite a bit of her writing, and as it so happens, my professor knows Solnit personally. So, on March 19th, my class had the amazing opportunity to speak with her in a smaller setting. We were able to ask her questions about her writing, her theories, and her life in general. “Being such a great female writer yourself, what advice do you have for an aspiring female author?” I asked her, absolutely starstruck. She replied that I should find my writing role models and just continue to write as much as I can. It was hard to keep myself from screaming that she was this role model for me, that I would be looking up to her for the rest of my life, not only as a writer but as a person as well. I had the absolute privilege and honor to have Solnit sign my copy of her book Men Explain Things to Me, and I will cherish the memory of meeting her forever.
Just a week after meeting my idol, my suite was all set to head to Fort Lauderdale for our first spring break of college. There were a few minor hiccups, which is to be expected. Didi missed her flight and wasn’t able to make it to the beach with us, I forgot my meds (but somehow survived pretty well without them!!), and we all got burned to a crisp in the sun, except Gabby with her Italian skin (still jealous). Overall though, it was a great trip. We got some much-needed beach relaxation, and we were able to spend some great quality time together (sadly minus one suite member).
Many of you have probably seen my Facebook post about surprising my little sisters by coming home for the second half of my spring break. I’ve been scheming with my parents for about a month and a half, and it’s been torturous to keep the secret from the twins. My flight left Fort Lauderdale at 10pm, so I landed at 1am. This wouldn’t have been that big of a deal, but I then had to drive about two and a half hours home. After being picked up by dad, we went back to his apartment, saw his kitten, and then I drove myself back to Truman. I finally arrived at about 3:30am and quickly woke the twins up. You can see the videos of their reactions on my facebook at: https://www.facebook.com/courtney.zaharia/posts/1972401922801436?notif_id=1522341610712635¬if_t=feedback_reaction_generic&ref=notif
It’s been an eventful couple of weeks, but I’ll hopefully be better about keeping up with posting in the future. Happy Easter everyone!!
Stay tuned for more updates!
